Abstract

Ledebouria is a genus of deciduous or weakly evergreen bulbs in the Hyacinthaceae family. This is recognized as the first collection made of the new taxon Ledebouria hyderabadensis. The compound Scillascillin 1 is a rare and novel benzocyclobutene ring containing homoisoflavanone, isolated for the first time from L. hyderabadensis. In vitro anticancer activity performed using MTT assay, on compound 1 and its semi synthetic derivatives showed significant inhibitory activity against human cancer cell lines A549 (Adenocarcinoma), HepG2 (Hepatocellular carcinoma), MCF-7 (breast cancer),SKOV3 (Ovarian Adenocarcinoma)and HeLa(Immortalised). Amongst the derivatives, compound 4 showed better anti-cancer activity against HepG2 (IC50: 61.34 ± 0.31 µM) when compare with parent Scillascillin 1(IC50: 244.69 ± 0.01 µM).
