Registration of new variety CIM-Atishrestha: High-oil and high-patchoulol-yielding variety of patchouli for Southern India

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.), a perennial aromatic shrub belonging to the family Lamiaceae, is an industrially important crop valued for its essential oil, which is widely utilized in the perfumery, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. Despite its high economic potential, the genetic improvement of patchouli has been limited due to narrow genetic variability and the vegetative mode of propagation. Besides the availability of several exotic cultivars from Singapore and Java for cultivation in India, the patchouli varieties CIM-Samarth, CIM-Shrestha, and CIM-Utkrisht developed by CSIR-CIMAP are also popular. Addressing the pressing need for high-oil-yielding and superior-quality cultivars, a new clone, CIM-P22, registered as the new variety CIM–Atishrestha, has been developed through mutation breeding. It produces a dry leaf yield ranging from 4.00 to 4.80 tonnes per hectare per harvest. The oil content, determined by the Clevenger apparatus, varies between 2.80 and 3.50%, while on a dry weight basis (30 kg sample), it ranges from 2.20 to 2.60%. The oil yield on a dry weight basis is about 88.0 to 125.0 kg per hectare. The patchouli alcohol content, which is the key quality parameter, ranges from 45 to 60% by the Clevenger method, and 35 to 40% in a 30 kg dry weight sample.
