Abstract

Bidens biternata (Lour.) Merr. & Sheriff- of family Asteraceae, is an erect, slender, branching, annual herb with quadrangular stem and hairy opposite leaves.  lt is a common weed occurs worldwide.  In India it is distributed in Southern Western Ghats regions of Kerala and is used as a leafy vegetable herb to cure hepatitis by Kani, Kattunaayika, Paniya and Chetti tribes of Waynadu Districts. In the present study, non-enzymatic antioxidants like proline, lycopene, proanthocyanidins, flavonoids, flavonols, totalpolyphenol (TP), and enzymatic antioxidants like glutathione reductase, ascorbate peroxidase,  monodehydro  ascorbate  reductase,   catalase, peroxidase,  superoxide  dismutase,  glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S transferase,  ascorbate oxidase, polyphenol oxidase and lipoperoxides (LPx) present in Bidens biternata were evaluated by standard analytical methods. Results revealed that this wild leafy vegetable has numerous antioxidant factors that can destroy the free radicals that damage the cells and its consumption in the form of herbal preparations could play a role in preventing human diseases in which free radicals are involved.
